Monitor Refresh Rate – The actual definition
For a new user, it is very important to know that What is the Monitor Refresh rate? In very simple words, “refresh rate is, how many numbers of times an image gets refreshed on the screen of a monitor in one second”. In other words, it is the frequency of refreshing an image on the monitor screen due to which its measurement unit is also the same as frequency. The monitor refresh rate is measured as “Hertz or Hz”. For example 60Hz, 144Hz, etc.
Effects of lower Refresh rate
This is a common question as a buyer or user of any type of display panel that what will be the effect on my display quality if the refresh rate of my monitor is less. The answer to this question is “flickering of the screen”. If the refresh rate of the monitor will be less than due to slower change in the picture on the screen, the flickering of the display will occur due to which black frames appear on the screen and the quality of the display will be affected.
Required Refresh rate
The required refresh rate is directly depending on the need and nature of the usage of the monitor. For example, the old cinema screen was worked on just 24Hz that’s why black frames and lines were seen abundantly on that screen.
Traditional old TV sets which were worked on PAL and NTSC standards were worked at the refresh rate of 50Hz and 60Hz respectively. That’s why PAL was considered a low-quality video standard while NTSC was considered a better video encoding standard only because of its refresh rate. In this way, if we talked about the lowest refresh rate which is required for a display panel for an average quality display is 60Hz.
Refresh Rate for HD graphics and Gaming quality Display
A high refresh rate monitor is a vital part of any better gaming system or high-quality graphics editing. As higher as the refresh rate of a monitor will be, movements of objects in the game or video editing will be perfect. While in the case of graphics designing, colors will be in their true form closest to the real. A game lover cannot get the maximum level of entertainment without a high refresh rate monitor.
For such kind of higher-end computer games, 144Hz refresh rate monitors are considered best. But, very latest, these 144Hz monitors are gradually becoming the story of the past because the refresh rate of the monitors is getting very high up to 244Hz. For casual gaming and moderate-level graphics and video editing, 100Hz refresh rate monitors are also enough.
The screen of any monitor is consists of very small box-like areas. Each of these very small areas is called “Pixel”. Each pixel is getting bright and collectively they brighten the screen and for the images with colors. Change of screen or image color is occurred by changing the color of the pixel. The time which is required to change the color of a pixel from one color to another is termed as “Response time”. Response time is measured as “millisecond”. As lower as the response time will be, the quality of the monitor will be higher.
If response time is lower but the refresh rate of a monitor is not in accordance with it then the quality of display will not better. Lower response time with a higher refresh rate of the monitor gives outstanding display quality.
Different technologies of monitors have different response times which change the display quality of these display panels. TN LCD panels with poor viewing angels have a response time up to 1ms while IPS display panels have good viewing angels but the response rate can be higher as 4ms to 8ms.
Organic Light-Emitting Diodes or OLEDs have the lowest response rate which is their advantage over LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). OLED are electronic display panels while in LCDs, tiny liquid crystals are embedded in the surface of the screen which moves physically. This is the architectural difference between LCD and LED. The response rate of OLED is as lower as 0.01ms. With higher response time, the display of monitors becomes a blur.
Changing the Refresh Rate on your computer
It is very simple and easy to change the refresh rate of your Windows computer or laptop display. First of all, we discuss the way through which you can change the refresh rate of your monitor in Windows 10.
- The first step to do this in Windows 10 is, Right Click on Desktop, and from the pop-upped menu, click on the option of Display Settings present near the bottom of this menu. As shown in the below image.
- In the opened Window, scroll down and click on the option of Advanced Display Settings.
- On the next opened Window of Advanced Display Settings, click on Display adapter properties.
- On Display adapter properties, click on the ‘Monitor’ tab and select your appropriate refresh rate from the drop-down option of “Screen Refresh Rate”. This drop-down menu contains these refresh rates which are supported by your display monitor. See the image below
